Simple Crochet Dishcloth (Free Beginner-Friendly Pattern)

I wanted to design a simple pattern that uses the most common, basic crochet stitches. The two stitches that are used in this pattern are the chain (ch) stitch and single crochet (sc). Since single crochet is the first stitch most beginners learn, this makes the Simple Crochet Dishcloth pattern beginner-friendly. Below is the written pattern and a link to the video tutorial.

Materials:

  • Medium 4 weight cotton yarn
  • 5.00 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Stitches/Abbreviations:

Notes:

Turning chain one does NOT count as a stitch. Anything written in parentheses followed by an asterisks ()* is to be repeated. The number noted before ‘sts’ in parentheses at the end of each row note represents the total number of stitches for that row.

Directions:

CH38

Row 1: SC into the second ch from the hook and into every ch across. CH1. TURN. (37 sts)

Row 2: SC into the first st. CH1. SKIP a st. SC into the next st. (CH1. SKIP a stitch. SC into the next st.) * repeat across. CH1. TURN. (37 sts)

Row 3: SC into the first st. (SC into the ch-1 sp. SC into the next st) * repeat across. CH1. TURN. (37 sts)

Rows 4-37: Repeat alternating rows 2 and 3. Do NOT turn after completing row 37.

Border Round:

  • SC down the side by adding a sc into the side of each row
  • SC, CH1, SC in the corner
  • SC across the bottom
  • SC, CH1, SC in the corner
  • SC up the side by adding a sc into the side of each row
  • SC, CH1, SC in the corner
  • SC across the top
  • CH1
  • SS to the top of the first sc of the round (or use invisible join)

Fasten off. Weave in ends.
