Crochet Christmas Wreath (Free Pattern)

This pattern uses US terminology on how to crochet a Christmas wreath. This crochet Christmas wreath is constructed by crocheting around a metal ring. Use your creativity to decorate this wreath in any way you would like; some examples include: an ornament for the tree, door hanger, or wall decor. A bell can be added to hang in the center of the wreath. The wreath can also be decorated with embellishments like beads, buttons, gems, and mini appliqués. Below are the written instructions and video tutorial on how to crochet a Christmas wreath:

Materials:

  • Medium 4 weight yarn (Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Color Mid Green)
  • 4.00 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Ribbon
  • Metal ring (3 inch diameter or preferred size)
  • Bell (optional)
  • Embellishments to decorate wreath (optional)

Abbreviations/Stitches:

Special stitch:

Puff Stitch (PS): (Yarn over. Insert the hook into the stitch. Pull up a loop.)* two times. Yarn over and pull through all five loops on the hook. Puff Stitch completed.

Notes:

This pattern is worked in-the-round. The beginning chain(s) does NOT count as a stitch unless specified otherwise. Anything written within parentheses followed by an asterisk ()* is to be repeated throughout the round. This is an intermediate crochet pattern. Labeled pictures are provided to show stitch placement. If more clarification is needed, then check out the video tutorial located below the written instructions. This pattern allows for stitch count adjustments to cover the ring as long as the stitch count is in multiples of four.

The metal ring that is used in this pattern tutorial.

Attaching the yarn to the metal ring:

1. Insert the hook through the middle of the ring from front to back. Hook the yarn.

2. Pull up a loop.

*Make sure to hold the tail end to secure it. Continue to secure that tail end through the next few steps. Once more stitches are added, then the yarn end will be secured without holding it.

3. Yarn over. Pull yarn through the loop to make a chain stitch.

4. Chain stitch made.

5. Now start the first single crochet by working over the ring and yarn end.

6. First single crochet made. Continue single crocheting over the yarn end as you work around the ring.

*I crocheted the first five single crochets over the tail end. After that I only crocheted over the ring. The rest of the tail end will be weaved in later.

Directions:

*52 single crochets were enough to cover my ring. If you need to crochet more or less to cover your ring then that is ok. Just make sure the single crochet stitch count is in multiples of four.

Round One: 52SC around the metal ring (or any other amount in multiples of four to cover the ring). SS into the first sc of the round. CH1.

Round Two: SC. CH4. TR into the previous sc. DC into the middle of the previous tr. SKIP the next three stitches. (SC into the next stitch. CH4. TR into the previous sc. DC into the middle of the previous tr. SKIP the next three stitches. )* repeat around. SS into the first sc of the round.

Round Three: (Pull up on the ss loop to make it longer to work the first ps) (PS, CH3, PS) into the first sc from the previous round. SC into the ch4 space from the previous round. [(PS, CH3, PS) into the next single crochet from the previous round. SC into the ch4 space from the previous round.]* repeat around. SS into the top of the first ps.

Round Four: SS into the ch3 space from the previous round. CH1. SC into the same ch3 space. CH4. TR into the previous sc. DC into the middle of the previous tr. (SC into the next ch3 space. CH4. TR into the previous sc. DC into the middle of the previous tr.)* repeat around. SS into the first sc of the round.

Hanging loop (optional): CH to desired length, then SS back into the first sc of the round.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Ribbon: Weave the ribbon in and out through the open spaces between the stitches from round two.
