Crochet Sunflower Applique (Free Pattern)

Sunflowers are so colorful and bright. Why not bring some of this colorful brightness into a crochet piece. The Crochet Sunflower Appliqué is worked up in just a few rounds and does not require a lot of time or yarn usage to make. It can be a wonderful added accent to other crochet pieces or remain as is. Yellow is a very common color for sunflowers, but they also come in other colors that range from cream to gold, red, orange, mahogany and brown. So, have fun working with different colors to create your own unique crochet sunflower.

Crochet appliqués can be fun to make. They work up quickly and can be attached to other crochet pieces as decorative embellishments. Some examples of crochet appliqué usages include clothing, accessories, handbags, blankets, scarfs, hats, home decor, pillows, garland . . .

Materials:

  • Medium 4 weight acrylic yarn (I Love This Yarn in colors Mahogany Singe Print, and Yellow)
  • 4.00mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Abbreviations/Stitches:

Special Stitches:

BEGPUFF: (YO. Insert the hook into the same stitch as the beginning ch2. Pull up a loop)* repeat these steps one more time. Five loops will remain on the hook. YO. Pull through all five loops on the hook. CH1.

PUFF: (YO. Insert the hook into a stitch. Pull up a loop)* repeat these steps two more times. Seven loops will remain on the hook. YO. Pull through all seven loops on the hook. CH1.

Notes:

This pattern is worked in-the-round. Anything written in parentheses followed by an asterisks ()* is to be repeated throughout the round. The total number of stitches for each round is noted in parentheses at the end of each round note.

Directions:

Round 1: MC. CH1. 8SC. SS into the first sc of the round.

Round 2: CH2. BEGPUFF into the same st as the ch2. (PUFF into the next st)* repeat around. SS into the top of the beg puff st. (8 puff sts)

Round 3: CH2. BEGPUFF into the same st as the ch2. PUFF into the ch1 st from the previous round. (PUFF into the top of the puff st from the previous round. PUFF into the ch1 st from the previous round)* repeat around. SS into the top of the beg puff st. (16 puff sts)

Fasten off.

Attach yarn to the top of the begpuff st from the previous round.

*Each petal is crocheted into the top of each puff stitch from the previous round.

Round 4: [Complete the following stitches into the same stitch to create a petal: (CH3, 2TR, CH3, SS into the first ch made, 2TR, CH3, SS into the same st)].

Round 4 continued: (SS into the next st, CH3, 2TR, CH3, SS into the first ch made, 2TR, CH3, SS into the same st)* repeat into each puff st around. (16 petals total)

Fasten off after completing all 16 petals.

Thread the yarn end from front to back into the base of the beginning ch3 of the first petal.

Weave in ends.

Arrange petals nicely by going around in one direction laying one petal on top of one next to it.
