Crochet Stitches

Crochet Puff Stitch (PS)

The crochet puff stitch may be seen abbreviated as “ps” or “puff”. The puff stitch is created by several partially completed stitches worked into one stitch. These partially completed stitches create many loops. The yarn is then pulled through these loops to compact the stitches into a puffy cluster. Typically, the puff stitch ends with seven loops on the hook or with eleven loops on the hook; or preferred amount to achieve desired puffiness of the stitch. Less loops create a thinner stitch, whereas more loops create a thicker stitch. When working on a pattern requiring a puff stitch, it is usually noted as to how many loops to end with. This tutorial demonstrates step-by-step instructions on how to crochet a puff stitch.

Terms used:

  • working yarn: the strand of yarn coming from the skein(ball)
  • yarn over (yo): wrapping the yarn over the crochet hook

1. How to Crochet a Puff Stitch (PS)

This tutorial is demonstrated from a base row of double crochet and starting in the next stitch after two double crochet on the current row.

  1. Yarn over.

2. Insert the hook into a stitch.

3. Hook the working yarn.

4. Pull the working yarn through the stitch. Three loops will remain on the hook.

*Make sure the loops are the same height has the stitch next to it. ex: this image shows the loops are pulled up to match the height of the double crochet stitch that is next to it.

5. Yarn over.

6. Insert the hook into the same stitch.

7. Hook the working yarn.

8. Pull the working yarn through the stitch. Five loops will remain on the hook.

*Make sure the loops are the same height as the stitch next to it.

9. Yarn over.

10. Insert the hook into the same stitch.

11. Hook the working yarn.

12. Pull the working yarn through the stitch. Seven loops will remain on the hook.

*Make sure the loops are the same height has the stitch next to it.

*For a thicker puff stitch, continue until there are eleven loops on the hook, or preferred amount to achieve desired puffiness of the stitch.

13. Yarn over.

14. Pull the working yarn through all seven loops on the hook. One loop will remain on the hook.

15. Yarn over.

16. Pull the working yarn through the loop on the hook to complete a chain stitch. One loop will remain on the hook.
